Ida Yog Influencer Parmita
Tell us about yourself Hi I’m Parmita; a pet-mom, raw-food chef and a yoga student first, then teacher. I love travelling to places to get inspired by nature, people, food and fashion. I’d call myself a safe-keeper/collector of memories and stories. I love my job which is an offspring of my journey into well being called Prana Kitchen and my motivation to work harder is to provide my doggo, Leo with a better lifestyle . Clearly it’s a dog’s life! :’) What experience brought you to yoga? Tell us about your Yoga Journey Fortunately I was introduced to Yoga in school as a subject, but I only resorted to it when life threw a fair share of challenges my way. At J.B. Petit my teacher Ms Sanjana took us in 8th grade to Shri Ramana Maharishi’s Ashram (Tiruvanmalai), Sri Aurobindo Ashram and Matri Mandir. My father’s self-discipline always inspired me with to follow a yogic lifestyle. He encouraged me to get a Yoga Diploma; from the same school that he did – Kaivalyadhama; to dive further into the knowledge and build my curiosity. He is my favourite yoga buddy to practise with , go to Rishikesh & Bali for Yoga festivals with, attend Vipassana and meditation retreats at Osho Ashram with and indulge in massages at Ananda Spa in the Himalayas. It is this foundation of various teachers, parents, gurus that I owe my deepest gratitude to; for sowing the seeds that have sprouted into a lifestyle. How did you discover Ida Yog and what do you love about it? A friend of mine, Harsh who too did a diploma from the same yoga school Kaivalyadhama (currently studying Sanskrit in Kerala) told me of a fellow batch-mate of his at Yoga School, Shalini who had started making yoga mats using natural materials like cork/jute and put us in contact. For me going vegan resulted in questioning a lot of my lifestyle choices and their impact. Thus I loved that ida yoga was making products from earth-friendly materials allowing to spread the awareness of sustainable -living. Tell us more about your current yoga journey. What style(s) of yoga do you teach? Practice? I don’t like limiting my practice to a particular style though I have formally trained in a Hatha Yoga School and have done an Ashtanga course; I feel my style is very organic. Since yoga has been a part of my lifestyle since 8th grade my practice or style is reflective of that intimacy I share with Yoga. If I had to express a little detail about my class or style of teaching; I would say yoga for me is not a set of postures or asanas, it’s the journey down there. I also feel yoga is a tool to become friends with your monkey- mind and connect with your inner-child, so in my classes I try to assist my students to re-establish those relationships with themselves. What yoga certifications do you have? Post Graduate Yoga Diploma Course, Yoga Teachers Training Course Kaivalyadhama Mumbai, Ashtanga Mysore Style Course Indea Yoga Mysore, Sound & Frequency Teachers Training Programme Level 1 & 2 Do you have any events or workshops coming up? Every Sunday we curate events at Prisim Healing Institute, which is my mother’s alternative healing centre, to create a community of people who are committed to their well-being. We collaborate with different Yoga teachers, Sound Healers, Movement Practitioners etc to provide different experiences for our audience. On 4th May we had a Shoonya Meditation Course which is an all-day course where we are collaborating with Yashwant Saran of 136.1 Yoga Studio, Chennai. People were introduced to various styles of meditation techniques and Prana Kitchen were provided a Vegan Thali. All our event details are available on our website www.pranakitchen.in Other than yoga, what are your hobbies or favorite ways to spend your time? I enjoy attending and conducting food workshops and wellness retreats. I also like to read, go out to new cafes, watch movies or play cards with my family. I enjoy spending time in nature so whatever my schedule allows for either a visit to a park; watch the sunset on my terrace or a weekend trip. I love scuba diving and since I’ve trained in Classical Ballet I enjoy watching art/ dance/ Cultural performances at the NCPA. On weekends you can find me at the quarter enjoying a live jazz performance or a cozy spot in Bandra listening to a gig. Other than yoga, what is your favorite way to take care of yourself? I like listening to kirtans by Krishna Das, Snatam Kaur and other such artists, I enjoy dancing, attending full moon circles, hiking/trekking around my city, taking my doggy on a beach / to the park, etc When I feel a little low I like doing these bathing rituals where I pull out a set of my favourite essential oils, bath salts, body scrubs and face mask (all natural ingredients of course ) and also do an Oracle read for myself since I have a lot of the Doreen Virtue Angel /Unicorn / Goddess cards. What is your life’s philosophy? The mantra you live by? Wabi – Sabi a Japanese Phrase meaning finding the beauty in imperfection What is your favorite place that you have travelled and why? Bali has a special place in my travelogue because of reasons more than one – it is where I received my raw chef training, the community at large is very dedicated to spiritual wellbeing, it’s blessed with abundance of nature and you’re always surrounded with smiling faces waiting to serve you. Apart from Bali few of my favorite destinations are Maldives, Seychelles, Japan and New Zealand. Narrate an experience as a student of yoga that has changed you. I believe yoga changes you in ways more than one and sometimes it’s difficult to track those changes. You can’t seem to notice the little changes and suddenly you’re no-longer that girl who you used to be. Well this holds true for me. I every year go to Kodaikanal to Bodhi Zendo (most often to bring in my birthday) for a Vipassana Retreat with Patrick Kearney an Australian Teacher; and I feel that has changed my life for the Better. It is because of of yoga that I was even able to appreciate such a meaningful practice of silence (internal and external i.e. pratyahar), observance of the breath and mindful movement.
